About This Gig
Hell Must Be Empty Single Launch Supported by Queen of Hearts 5pm - Queen of Hearts 6pm - The Smith & Western Jury Full Moon Fever [Upstairs at Lulie Tavern] After a busy year on the road The Smith & Western Jury return to their favourite Melbourne dive, Lulie Tavern , to celebrate the release of Hell Must Be Empty , the third single from their forthcoming album. A cinematic Western anthem with a dark and deeply personal story, Hell Must Be Empty was written in response to a horrific story of femicide in Australia — a reality that is tragically all too common. At its heart is the line “Hell must be empty, the devils are all here.” Inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, lead singer Sam reimagines the quote through the lens of her own lived experience, capturing the everyday acts of self-protection many women know too well. Gripping your keys, pretending to be on the phone, and choosing the well-lit route home. Wanting to turn a confronting subject into positive action, the band have partnered with Australian charity ‘Safe Steps’, donating $10 from every ticket sold to their Melbourne show at Lulie Tavern on October 3 rd to the charity. Safe Steps provides 24/7 crisis support to people experiencing family and domestic violence across Victoria. Joining the band on the night will be the fiercely talented female mariachi band Queen of Hearts , making this a special night of music, community and solidarity.
